KILLEEN – Metroplex Health System is hosting the Groundbreaking and Name Unveiling Ceremony for its new Women's Health Center. This event is scheduled for Friday, April 18 at 3:00 PM at the entrance to the Ambulatory Surgery Center at Metroplex Hospital, 2201 South Clear Creek Road in Killeen.

During the ceremonies, the naming of the center will be revealed. It has been held secret up to the present, and will be named after a highly respected and prominent female leader in the community.

The new Women's Center is scheduled for completion in the spring of 2009 and will provide for the growing health care needs of this community. “It is exciting knowing that the day is near when Metroplex will offer an all-inclusive women's healthcare center that cares for women of all ages within a warm and inviting environment,” says Ken Finch, CEO and President of Metroplex Health System. “In the years to come, this center will have an everlasting impact on the lives of generations of women – women at all stages of life.

The $8.2 million dollar facility will be created by refurbishing, updating and redesigning existing space within Metroplex Hospital, and adding an additional 7,200 square feet to improve patient comfort, facility aesthetics and hospital staff work flow. The new facility will provide labor and delivery care, laboratory testing, Osteoporosis care, breast care, women's Radiology (Ultrasound and Mammography Services), Oncology, Gynecological, and Urological care, as well as a Health Resource Room dedicated to women's health needs.

The major emphasis of change will take place in the labor and delivery area of the hospital. The number of labor and delivery rooms (LDRs) will expand from five to eight. In turn, this will require the addition of seven postpartum rooms for a total of 24, all designed with private accommodations. The current nursery will be relocated, expanded, and upgraded in technology.  This move would centralize the nursery within the postpartum area, requiring minimal transport of newborns. Also, these improvements will allow for more time between mother and baby while providing the staff a relaxing environment to teach health and care techniques.

In addition to the inpatient services, the Women's Health Center will have an education classroom with curriculum to promote healthy lifestyles. Educational seminars and classes would include prenatal preparation, childbirth education and newborn care, nutrition and exercise for a healthy family, stress management, and life at menopause just to name a few.
