Metroplex Receives Distinguished Recognition

KILLEEN – Metroplex has been named one of the Best in Texas for Newborn Hearing Screening Programs in 2007 by the Texas Department of State Health Services, which is the highest rating possible for a birthing hospital.

“We are very excited for this distinguished recognition,” said Carolyn Lockridge, Director of Maternal and Child Services. “The nursery is grateful for Lorna Foster, CNA and her meticulous testing.”

Lockridge explained Foster is the dedicated nurse to check every newborn’s hearing. “She is extremely thorough about her job and is great about following up with the babies who do not pass the screening.”

Foster typically waits until the baby is at least eight hours old. With the new, highly advanced equipment purchased in 2006, this in-depth testing can determine at this young age if the child has properly-developed hearing. If the newborn fails the first screen, Foster waits to test the baby right before going home. If the baby fails again, Foster immediately schedules for the parent to bring the child back for more testing.

“Follow-ups are extremely important because you cannot just assume the baby is failing the tests based on clogged or unclean ears,” Foster explained. “I’d rather be safe and have the parent bring the newborn back.”

Newborn hearing screens, referral for follow-up, informing parents and the physician are all mandated by the State of Texas. In order to be certified as distinguished, the hearing test must be performed on 98% of the newborns, and 95% must pass the screen in addition to other specified requirements.

“We are very proud of Lorna and her dedication to excellent care,” Lockridge said.
