Sue Mayborn Women’s Center Open to Public

All media is invited for additional information and photo opportunities from 10:00 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, February 3, 2009

KILLEEN — The Sue Mayborn Women’s Center is now an official member of the Metroplex Health System family. Phase 1 of construction is completed. “We are right on schedule with the new women’s center,” said Vice President Jeff Villanueva. “This portion of the facility will be available to all patients, visitors and families Tuesday, February 3, 2009.”

Metroplex President/CEO Ken Finch explained the center is a welcomed addition to the growing needs of this community. “Our goal is to meet the demands of population growth in West Bell, Coryell and Lampasas counties by consolidating and coordinating women's health services into one convenient area while also improving patient comfort, aesthetics and work flow,” Finch said. In addition to inpatient services, the women's center will also promote wellness and prevention.

Maternal Services Director Carolyn Lockridge, BSN expressed her excitement of transforming from a 14-bed, semi-private unit to a 24-bed, private post-partum unit. “We will provide even better couplet care,” she explained. “The father now has a place to sleep so he can be there 24/7 to enjoy and assist in the care of their new baby.”

The new facility will also host a dedicated room for sick babies with new and updated equipment for monitoring their care. A procedure room for circumcisions, hearing screens, etc. is now available to help eliminate the use of the main nursery and increase privacy.

“Another great addition with the Sue Mayborn Women’s Center is a ‘mother’s room’,” said Lockridge. “This room is for moms whose baby is confined to the nursery. She can come here to visit and feed her baby.”

In addition to an expanded and completely renovated nursery, a 2-bed isolation nursery has been built for babies who need to return for care after discharge or who need to be isolated for various reasons. Metroplex officials are working towards having a NICU Level II nursery in the near future.

Phase 2 construction will start in early February, and the center will be completed in Summer 2009. During the next several months, the Sue Mayborn Women’s Center services will expand to eight new labor and delivery suites, digital mammography, ultrasound, DEXA Scan, laboratory and a patient education/research conference room. “The center will offer a healing environment designed specifically for women,” added Villanueva.

Metroplex’s mission is to provide complete health that includes the emotional, spiritual and physical needs of our patients. “We want to continuously increase the level of service we provide,” said Finch. “It is exciting knowing that in the years to come, the all-inclusive Sue Mayborn Women’s Center will have an everlasting impact on the lives of women.”
