Youth Volunteer Application

 

Volunteering in hospitals is a distinct honor and privilege for young people. In order for each selected youth volunteer to be fully integrated into the position of Youth Volunteer, Metroplex Health System has established the following criterion:

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 15
  • Complete online application and submit it to the Volunteer Department before May 10th
  • Have references available (one from school, one from a community member)
  • Submit a brief essay on “Why I Should Be a Metroplex Youth Volunteer”        
  • Attend an informational meeting with parent/guardian regarding Youth Volunteering

Priority in Selection Process:

Tentatively, a maximum of 15 youths will be selected for the program to work in the various units throughout the hospital. Priority selection will be based on the following:

  • Previous summer youth volunteers who have rendered outstanding service and thereby are invited to return to service.
  • Youth volunteers who have successfully served as Extended Hours Volunteers with loyal and dependable service during the 2008-2009 year.
  • New applicants who meet the above qualifications and are chosen to serve by the selection committee.

Selection Process:

The interview committee will consist of veteran youth volunteers and adult volunteers.

Candidates with outstanding essays and recommendations will be chosen to attend a personal interview as a final step in the selection process. Each finalist chosen thereafter will be interviewed by the selection committee. Finalists will be notified no later than May 15th.

 

Expectations:

  • Prospective Youth Volunteer and their parent/guardian will attend an informative evening meeting regarding the Youth Volunteer Program.
  • Each youth volunteer chosen will be expected to complete a 6-week commitment. Staffing schedules will be made by the volunteer coordinator according to the hospital’s needs.
  • Summer Youth Volunteers will uphold Standards of Behavior established by the Adventist Health System and the Metroplex Health System Volunteers.

Tentative Schedule:

  • Applications accepted April 10th  to May 10th
  • Interviews week of May 11th to May 15th
  • Youth Volunteer Informative meeting with youth volunteer and parent week of May 18th
  • Volunteer Youth training on June 19th
  • Youth Volunteer service begins June 22nd and ends on July 30th 

Check list for Summer Youth Volunteer Program:

  • Submit completed application
  • Include sealed envelopes with 2 letters of recommendations
  • Submit an essay based on the topic: “Why I Should be a Metroplex Health System Youth Volunteer”
  • Parent/guardian must attend an informative briefing May 19 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
