Lap Band Surgery

A laparoscopic adjustable gastric band, commonly referred to as a lap band, is an inflatable silicone device that is placed around the top portion of the stomach.  Lap band surgery is designed for obese patients with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or greater.  The placement of the band creates a small pouch at the top of the stomach that holds approximately 110 to 220 grams of food each meal. This pouch fills with food quickly, and the band slows the passage of food from the pouch to the lower part of the stomach. This causes a full sensation, which helps the person to be hungry less often, to feel full more quickly and for a longer period of time, to eat smaller portions and lose weight over time.

Sleeve Gastrectomy: Alternative to Gastric Bypass

Sleeve gastrectomy is a surgical, weight-loss procedure in which the stomach is reduced to about 15% of its original size, by surgical removal of a large portion of the stomach. The procedure permanently reduces the size of the stomach. The procedure is performed laproscopically and is irreversible. Because the new stomach continues to function normally, there are far fewer restrictions on the foods which patients can consume after surgery, although the quantity of food eaten will be considerably reduced.
